Social Skills & DBT Groups for Kids & Teenagers, Summer Day Camps, Raleigh & Cary NC
Spencer enjoys facilitating therapy groups and primarily has experience in groups that are Dialectical Behavioral Therapy based (DBT). Spencer has run groups for teens that involve addressing topics such as goals and values, interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness, family dynamics, addictive and compulsive behaviors, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and coping skills and stress management. Among the benefits of group participation include social skills, positive peer pressure, peer support, and learning how to connect interpersonally with healthy boundaries while being effective. Spencer also provides Weekly Social Skills Groups and Social Skills Summer Day Camps covering issues of self-control, anger management, respect, bullying, gossiping, teasing, shyness, communication skills, listening skills, friendships, and self-esteem.
Before obtaining his license, Spencer spent over a decade working with children and teens in various recreation type settings as well as lay teaching positions. Spencer enjoys working with this population and finds it important to help with identity formation, self-esteem, and working through the struggles that often accompany this stage of life. Equally as important is helping this population connect with their family in creating healthy, age-appropriate boundaries as well as effective communication and learning how to understand emotions. He has also spent several years as a mentor to adolescents and helping them through family struggles, identity concerns, and teaching leadership and role modeling.
As a licensed therapist, Spencer seeks to focus on the origin of the presenting problem and walking through the process with the client of connecting the dots of past experiences and present behavior. Learning how our past is affecting us now is key to understanding how we need to grow and move towards a place of growth and healing.
When Spencer is not in the office the majority of his time is spent with his wife and young daughter enjoying laughing, being silly, and having quality time. Spencer also enjoys being outside, especially in the fall, walking, bike riding, and camping. Fall is his favorite time of year and he enjoys things like the State Fair, festivals, and most importantly a wedding anniversary. Spencer also likes tasty and unique food and is willing to try just about anything. Coffee is his other love and he finds both the smell and the taste to be a great way to start any day.
